I've been offline for a while in an intense production period working on my film. Its going to be a long way to go but am revolving on some interesting ideas. I've also been making a 3D short film on the side so when its done I'll post everything on Vimeo. Don't ask me how but I also managed to write a novel called "The Gothic Memorium' which is coming out very soon. There is a new website coming early next year but more on that later on.

I've made a total of 100 (series 1) new free lens flares for use in the Video Copilot Optical Flares program which are incrementally being uploaded onto their site over the next week. The next 100 (series 2) will be crafted especially for use in the new VFX stock videos I'm making for Tammy's business which you'll see a lot of in a few months. Am having so much fun with this I might just make 1000 and call myself Mr Michael Bay!

Here are the first examples of the study series for Uber memoria XX in 2D, anaglyphic 3D and Stereo 3D. These pick up from the Uber Memoria Proto series back in 2007 with a new body of work that I had originally sketched out and planned but never got around to filming. These were shot on the Fugi W3 and scaled to 2.35 in post. I'm setting up a gallery on Youtube to release all works together for free in all 3 formats. Now this forces me to go out and buy a pair of red/cyan shades!

I'm making background plates for a VFX 3D stereo project (the projected screens are 4:3). This shot is comprised of a foreground scene, sky replacement, Photoshoped trees, added DOF masks and some colour grading. I shot the time lapsed clouds on a 550D over my back fence. Have learnt a lot about the VFX process in a stereo space but the hard thing is woking in 8 channels (360 degree view). More images to come, its just taking a long time to complete...

Well there's a lot of new things coming next year for this funny little blog of mine - a new archive website, new advanced features and blog design, some great film projects and loads of new images. Looking back on it, 2010 was the most productive year I've had to date with over x4 major video installations, x85 single channel works, Arts Victoria money money money, a short film, 8 new short screenplays, one new feature-length screenplay, the first 15 minutes of Darklands, a few journal articles, and 3D versions of all of my major works since 2007. So thanks for dropping by and looking at my stuff. We had over 4000 page views this month alone - don't you people have anything better to do? :) so keep on coming back in 2011, the fun stuff is about to begin... To kick off 2011, I've got a few curated screenings in Berlin then its off to the USA for an exhibition, then a pretty big 3D shoot in February to be filmed at RMIT.

I was playing with After Effects today and converted some Uber memoria 1-30 works to 3D. Had a thought, why not go back and have a go at converting the Uber series and installations to 3D as companion pieces? So here are some quick examples... Im presuming if you wear 3D glasses whilst looking online that the effect will work (don't have any myself). p.s the new Uber installation thats almost finished (funded by Arts Victoria) will be in 3D. I see you.

New Work

Have been busy with a lot of production the past 6 weeks. Last Man on Earth is coming along, the next Uber installation is about to wrap and the Darklands trailers are being handed over for delivery tomorrow. Here's a sneak peak at some new Darkland's footage - shot the first 15 mins of the film using two DSLRs and a greenscreen as a dry run for the real thing. Hope you like them.

VFX Breakdown for Last Man on Earth Preview

I've been making a lot of weather effects for plate shots recently for the Last Man on Earth works and the Darklands trailer redo. Here is a before and after breakdown using RED footage and a sky replacement using material I shot last month. Its a 2K timeline in After Effects; the snow was made in particular. From here I'll post more shots as they come through of the composited elements that will go into the beach both in the water and on the sand.

My Acting Debut

Oh yes, I'm the lead actor in a new short film coming out soon titled The Vampire Monologues. Here's a sneak peak at what can only be said as the greenscreen curtain being more convincing than the acting. Thanks to the Dream Team for crewing for me, only the best. We filmed it on the JVC 201 at 720p with a 35mm ZF prime lens. The next two shorts Stake and Ear are to follow soon and gaurenteed to be even worse. I'll be in my trailer if you need me.

Last Man on Earth

Last Man on Earth is the companion piece for the next Uber series staring... me! It's about a quarter finished but was shot on a RED for the epic wide shots and the rest to be filmed in two weeks will be shot on a 550D. I'm starting to get into filming works partially on a RED then back fill on a DSLR - hey, its cheaper:) This work will lead directly into pioneering a workflow that can shoot Saturn Rising when I can get a hold of a RED again, theres just nothing that can come close to 4K. P.S - Tammy is starting a VFX business on line selling stock and CG media, some great products to come...

Arts Victoria grant!

I got another Arts Victoria grant this week to make the next Uber Memoria installation (21 channels). All of us have flu at home so no time to celebrate yet. It will be shot of a RED during (I think) September and filming a lot of greenscreen shots on the large soundstage I hired the Darklands trailer. Will post more when I'm back on board.

Here's a still from the third and final Darklands trailer in progress. For those tech heads out there I'm working on a super anamorphic 2K timeline with 4K footage in AE. Should have all three done very soon. Thanks to all the emails over the last two weeks about the films, its going to be an exciting time. Greenscreen shoot today

We did some test shooting today using a 5D and a HD201 in the studio. We had never used the Canon before so it yielded some interesting results when comparing 720P and the 35mm sensor images. While the 5D is certainly no RED, it does have a lot of advantages in post workflows and comes up with a great looking image. The before and after pics are of Cat, they're a bit rough but will tweak more in AE to correct a few mistakes in the spill etc and lively the image up a bit. Thanks to everyone today who made it possible!

Darklands Trailer Nearing Completion

The Darklands trailers are still in progress as you can see above. Had a few tech issues with a 4K red timeline on my old mac that can just handle a 720 HDV workflow! (work out the spec maths here), not to mention learning advanced AE on the go (and the multitude of mistakes), still plugging away but very close to finishing soon. Its going to be worth the wait when its all done.

Some more un-screened takes from the 2007 Uber shoots redone in AE with VFX lighting etc. The new stuff I'm about to film soon will (in most cases) will invite the actors back from these early shoots into the same poses but framed in different locations so its more or less a continuum of the idea of remixing memory through the image. The shot above is Krystal near the wreck of the Australian WW1 warship Cerberus.

Uber Memoria 61-100 (Series 7)

First images from Uber Memoria 61-100. This new suite is comprised of 40 new works shot in 2007 and 2010. Returning to the old series format earlier this month, I found this sequence of footage I shot in a dilapidated house in Woodend, Victoria around late 2007. These were captured after a shoot I was doing for a friend and by the off chance just after we wrapped I asked the makeup artist to stand in for a few uber styled frames. The room was filled with rat poo and possum pee so it was in a pretty discussing state. And look what happened...

One of the things I was unhappy with from the Uber Memoria X suite was the limited scope of how I could light and play around with each part, as the uniform blue scheme had to hold up throughout the works in order to get the type of effect I wanted. Bringing these types of shots back to daylight again allowed me to be more faithful to the German source paintings and talk directly to that particular reference point. Here are some more pics from the first suite, hope you like them. Had a few questions this week about workflows, I'm cutting in a 720p FCP timeline then exporting out as an XML to AE for grading with Film Magic Pro, lighting with Optical Flares 1.2 and adding airborne particles with Particular.

Gothic Memoria X: Golden Winters

These are the first pics from the new Gothic Memoria X: Golden Winters series. They are created from takes I didn't use from the Uber Memoria X shoots in October-November 2008. There will be six suites of ten works each (eg. GM X-XVI) and locate a lot of new and old footage together that references late 18th century German Romanticist paintings in context to a Gothic sublime. These are created in lead up to Saturn Memoria beach and landscape shots I'm filming on green screen next week. Its nice to be working with Dr Phil, Cat and Sarah again... (Andrew shot these images by the way when I was on the sailing ship - pictured centre left - with the A Cam).

Some more stills from the Golden Summers series. There are a total of x30 new works in the suite, have finished all of the sequences today and rendering out (now) in AE but will take about a week to compile at 32 bit. Filming some scenes in my new feature called 'Saturn Rising' starting next week using greenscreen and 720p (nice and simple) and syncing the sound for the Darklands trailer as well, both of the trailers are due at the end of the month. Over the next few weeks I'm reworking some of the never before seen footage from the early 2007 Uber Memoria shoots to be compiled into the next Uber series titled 'Uber Memoria XII: Golden Summers' based on the Australian Impressionists work around the same name. All of the Uber, Gothic, and Nocturnus series created between 2007-2010 are also being re-mastered into 32 bit on Blu Ray release with a few new additional features added along the way. Santa sightings over Melbourne

Reports of a flying sleigh and reindeers have been circulating throughout Melbourne from around 12:35am this morning. NORAD has been tracking the flight path of this UFO and can be found on the link below for further updates. The photograph above shows what looks like the navigation lights of the sleigh and an enlarged section reveals what clearly resembles a Santa-like vehicle.

Other sightings in Frankston and Lower Dandenong have also described multiple home invasions of short, overweight aliens carrying large red sacks displaying jedi mind tricks. The intruders are rumoured to enter homes via chimneys but these are yet to be confirmed. If anyone encounters these intruders please avoid eye contact, if threatened or spotted these terrorists may respond with gibberish chants such as 'ho, ho, ho' or commence singing songs about pregnant teenagers illegally crossing the Egpytian boarder and occupying mangers to deliver their out-of-wedlock babies. Several attempts to bait traps of milk and cookies have failed.

In other developments, nine dignitaries in the UK have been sited leaping, and the little known Bavarian King, Wenceslas, has disappeared in heavy snow overnight with his page. The last known text message from the king referred to a "rude wind" which local police are using in conjunction with footprints found in the local area with heat found in the very sod. Meanwhile, in the middle east, a bright light in the sky has been reported seen over several countries dubbed by three local leaders as a 'star of wonder'.

Some low res pics of the final versions of Uber Memoria X to be released this Friday as a complete suite. These were funded by an Arts Creation Grant, Arts Victoria and RMIT University. The next installment of Gothic Nocturnus is coming early Jan 09. Andrew Rostas has scored all of the series and sounds fantastic. Compilation grade DVDs available for $29.00 AUD. Selected works are on show now at the National Centre for Contemporary Art Moscow until late December.

The first release of Uber Memoria 9 (short version) will be screening at Optica 07 in Gijon, Spain in mid November along with other Australian artists Emma Sterling & Dan Monceaux. More than 200 artists are screening throughout the city so it should be a great festival.

Two New Feature Length Films

Two new companion feature length video art films of 'Gothic memoria' have just been announced: 'Epic memoria' and 'Locatus memoria' . These will sit as a trilogy of video art that re-addresses themes of Gothic Romanticism through the guise of video art.

Filming for all three works, and with their attached 'Uber memoria' variants (series 8 -20), will start on July 11th onwards.

update on Gothic memoria feature film

The Gothic memoria script is now complete and work on the film's production has started. All 21 scenes are approximately 5 minutes each and a casting call will be made over the next two weeks. Funding for the project has been successful so the initial location shots will be filmed shortly and the miniatures unit/cgi/greenscreen shots will begin in August.

More info and soon to come production stills will be released later in the month so stay tuned...

Final Production for extended Uber memoria series

The last Uber memoria series (9-21) will be filmed in late June/early July as a conclusion to the seven trilogy installation. This mammoth undertaking of x130 works is due to be filmed in various locations throughout Cairns, Melbourne and Hobart. Release of the complete works on DVD is due on October 18th, 2007; exactly one year since the first Uber film shoot in Germany.

Funding permitting, a back-to-back shoot will also happen at the same time - thank you Peter Jackson - with the yet to be named feature-length film using a selection of locations appearing in the final Uber works. The advantages of such are using the same crew, sets and actors amassed for the seven cam production (Uber series is shot on HDV, the new film shot on DVCProHD). More updates will be available soon.

I am participating in the group exhibition/project by the Voyeur International Video Collective opening Tuesday 6:00pm-8:00pm April 17th at 69 Smith Street Gallery in Melbourne. A total of 28 artists are screening their works who are based in Australia and elsewhere. My work features the first public screening of the Uber Memoria (short version) to be later displayed as a larger and more substantial edition.

The exhibition will tour to various venues in Zurich, Helsinki and Amsterdam later this year.

Uber memoria series 4-7

Here are some new images from the Uber memoria series 4-7 filmed in Melbourne during February 2007. Once the first Uber DVD was released there semed to be a significant interest in the initial series from a few curator friends of mine who are placing these works in various shows from next year onwards who then asked for more. As I originally planned for a total of x20 Uber series but stopped because of production delays I've gone back to create forty new works (x10 each series) over the last month. The second Uber DVD should be ready for sale around July/August funding permitting.

Series 8-12 are due for filming around late April/May featuring the expanded Friedrich painting re-appropriations.

Also, as some of you may have heard me talk recently about the 'mystery' feature-length film inspired from the Uber works (in pre-production), I can't say too much now except that it will be filmed in Pro HD and should be ready in time for Christmas, so stoping asking me!

With many thanks to Phil, Tam, Krystal, Tess and others who participated in filming and phone banter encouragement from Mr Lee.

The new bridging works between the Uber 1 & 2 and Gothic memoria series is now called Uber memoria proto re-addressing German Romantic seascape paintings in context to memory and place. Filming occured yesturday in coastal areas of Melbourne (Black Rock, Brighton Beach foreshore and surrounding area) where the scuttled 19th century battleship 'Cerberus' is located. Also note the bushfire smoke coming from Eastern Victoria and over Melbourne on the starred picture credit. More stills will be posted as editing continues...

Sneak Look at Gothic Memoria

Shaun Wilson, Gothic memoria [1]: 2% Berlin (2006-07), 3GP as single channel DVD, black and white, sound, 52 mins.

This is the first released still from the initial Gothic memoria series 1 works titled 2% Berlin, recently filmed in November 2006 at the Berlin Wall and the 'Topography of Terror' site. The film speed is slowed down to 2%, hence the title. The audio score features a composed piano quartet (performed by me) taken from the larger Memoria Sonic series (or "M-Sonic" for short) written especially for the Gothic memoria videoworks (approx. 1000).

The M-Sonic tracks were recorded in December 2006 and January 2007 and will be released as a double CD in November 2007.

Screening of 2% Berlin and related works will be in late 2007/early 2008.

New Video Series 'Gothic memoria' planned for 2007

As a responce to the current Uber memoria II series (2006-07), new video works will be filmed in various sites including Melbourne, Hobart and London throughout 2007 - as per a large proportion of footage filmed in Berlin and Stuttgart in 2006 not used both the Uber I & II series - to make up a total of six groupings with a total of 1000 video paintings. Production will start in May 2007 with a release date of December 2007. Exhibition of these works will be anounced later in the year.

Locations used are sites of significance in terms of memory and place. For example, Soho Gardens contains WW2 yet to be restored Blitz air raid shelters beneath it's parkland; the RMIT University is home to sites of the original (and notorious) Old Melbourne Gaol and 1860s public hanging grounds cnr Swanston and LaTrobe Street; and the site of the Berlin Wall near Checkpoint Charlie, aka the 'topography of terror' presinct, contains the orginal sites of the State Police, the Reich Security main office, the SS, and the Reichsfuhrer. These builidngs were home to the Wannsee Conference and planning of the 'Germinisation' and 'Extermination' policies implimented by the Nazi government between 1942-1945.

Places used in Gothic memoria are:

Victoria: Howqua Valley,
Hobart: Battery Point fortification tunnels, Lower Sandy Bay foreshore

London: Soho Square Gardens
Schwaebisch Hall: Schaebisch Hall prison
New Zealand: Kepler Track

I will be curating the touring exhibition Australian Gothic to be exhibited at Project Space/Spare Room, Melbourne and Directors Lounge, Berlin in Feb 2007. The exhibition will be a survey show of current emerging and established Australian video artists. Evidenced work will reflect a 'Gothic' mode, as further discussed by Gerry Turcotte in his essay 'Australian Gothic' (Turcotte, 1995), including Brendan Lee's Two Birds with One Stone, Brie Trenerry's fly infested Sleep Paralysis and Tammy Honey's pop-desire Threesome. Future exhibition venues in the UK and USA will be added later in the year.
